UKCA MARKING

Since UK left the European Union, the UKCA marking has replaced the CE marking. Starting from 2022 the PPE put on the UK market must be UKCA marked.

The UK law related to PPE mirrors the EU law (Regulation EU 2016/425), with the exception that only the “UK Approved Bodies” are allowed to issue UKCA certifications rather than the “European Notified Bodies”. The European “harmonized standards”, under the name of “designated standards”, constitute the technical basis for the UKCA conformity assessment.

RICOTEST has an agreement with a UK Approved Body: Ricotest’s customers can apply for the UKCA extension of already EU certified PPE or apply for both UKCA and EU certification in case of new products. The UKCA certificate is issued by the UK Approved Body, the role of Ricotest is to manage the technical documentation and to cooperate with the UK Body for clarifications and amendments.

UKCA MARKING FOR THE ALREADY CE CERTIFIED PPE

Basic requirements

PPEs certified with valid harmonized standards. In case of superseded standards, the EU certificate has to be updated; Technical documentation in English language. In case of technical documentation in Italian language, it has to be translated by the customer and assessed by Ricotest. Translation of test reports and certificates by Ricotest.

Process

  1. RCT sends the list of valid EU certificates to the customer;
  2. The customer chooses the certificates to be extended to UKCA;
  3. RCT sends the formal quotation;
  4. If the customer accepts the quotation, RCT starts managing the procedure;
  5. There are no additional physical/chemical test to be performed;
  6. There are no additional samples to be sent; It’s enough to adapt the technical documentation already approved from RCT for the corresponding EU certificate;
  7. RCT forwards the adapted technical documentation to the UK Approved Body for the assessment and the issuing of the UKCA certificate.

Timing

Depends from: quantity of certificates to be extended; Status, completeness/accuracy and language of the documentation; workload of the UK Body (the UKCA system is totally new and under development: the demand is great and the UK institutes are few, so this could lead to some delays with regard to the timing).

NEW APPLICATION: EU TYPE CERTIFICATE + UKCA

Basic requirements

The technical documentation must be in English from the beginning.

Process

  1. Apply for UKCA certification and the EU one simultaneously;
  2. RCT runs the EU certification first;
  3. There are additional chemical tests to be performed (PCP, PAH’S, PHTALATES);
  4. The technical documentation has to indicate the UKCA references;
  5. Once the EU certification ends, RCT forwards the technical documentation to the UK Approved Body for the assessment and the issuing of the UKCA certificate.

Timing

As soon the EU certificate is issued, RCT forwards the technical documentation to the UK Approved Body. Then, the lead-time depends from the workload of the UK institute.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

  • Application form of the UK Approved Body;
  • Information notice: the customer must indicate that the UKCA certification has been issued by the UK Approved Body. This indication could be also provided as an attachment to the EU information notice;
  • Marking: since the UKCA and EU marking share the same info, it’s enough to put the UKCA logo on the product or on whatever accompanying documents (option available only until 31/12/2022);
  • Declaration of conformity: it must accompany the product or it has to be uploaded on a webpage (indicate the link in the information notice or in the attachment);
  • Risk assessment.
